Oxford University's research team in the United Kingdom released a study October 11 that suggests that a baby's heart starts beating as early as 16 days after conception.  Research found that the heart muscle in mice starts beating after 7.5 days. The equivalent of that in human anatomy would be 16 days.
"The heart is the first organ to form during pregnancy and is critical to proving oxygen and nutrients to the developing embryo," Oxford officials stated.
"Science is catching up with what we have always known," said Mary Ellen Douglas of Campaign Life Coalition of Canada.  "Life begins with union of sperm and ovum, and what is in the womb after that is a human being with its own DNA, and with its own heart pumping blood."
