Heartbeat Bill passes General Assembly
Here's what happened:
December 14, 2018
The fetal Heartbeat Bill passed! House Bill 258 would prohibit abortions when a fetal heartbeat is detected. It passed the House 53 to 32, largely on party lines, after 1:15 a.m. Friday morning. Several lawmakers were missing. It passed the Senate on Wednesday 18 to 13, largely on party lines as well.
Governor Kasich vetoed the Heartbeat Bill which was on his desk for a potential signature.
In the state of the Ohio, the Governor is given ten days to sign a bill into law, to veto a bill, or to do nothing (in which case the bill goes into law without the Governor's signature). Kasich vetoed the life-saving bill.
Veto override process
To override Governor Kasich's veto of the Heartbeat Bill required three-fifths of each chamber is necessary for an override.
Three-fifths of members in both chambers must vote to override a veto. That will require 60 of the 99 members in the House and 20 of the 33 members in the Senate.
Action Required
We put pressure on our Governor, our Senators, and our State Representatives to ensure the Heartbeat Bill becomes law. Every day that passes, more babies die.
April 12, 2019
New Governor DeWine signed the Heartbeat Bill making Ohio the 6th state to protect the preborn person once a heartbeat is detected via external means. The current law in Ohio allows abortion up to 20 weeks and the Heartbeat Bill would move that line closer to 7 or 8 weeks.
The law was to go into affect July 10 but was challenged by the ACLU and Planned Parenthood so it now is in the hands of the courts to decide.
