What is the Leading Cause of Death in Ohio??
Toledo, Ohio – The loss of every life is tragic, especially those deaths that are not a result of their reckless behavior. Our society tracks numerous kinds of fatalities. Now with the COVID-19 Pandemic, both Ohio and our nation daily track and report the number of deaths (and probable deaths) from COVID-19.
Can you imagine if Governor DeWine held a weekly press conference to update Ohioans on the number of innocent babies destroyed from abortion? Do you think we as a culture would remain indifferent or unconcerned by this constant reminder and top-of-mind awareness? I think not.
Based on the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Ohio Abortion Report released last week, Ohio saw a 2% reduction in the number of reported abortions over 2018. Of the 20,102 induced abortions, 94% were Ohio residents. One positive trend we are seeing is a dramatic reduction in women 19 years and younger. In 2002, they accounted for 31.2% compared to 2019, where they accounted for just 9.8%. There has been a steady decline since 2013.
“We are absolutely encouraged that here in Lucas County, there were 383 fewer abortions than in 2018.” said Ed Sitter, Executive Director of Foundation for Life. “We and the Right to Life Action Coalition were relentless in our quest to hold Capital Care accountable to the letter of the law, which resulted in Capital Care surrendering their surgical license in September of 2019 because they failed or refused to comply with the health and safety standards required by ODH.” Sitter went on to say.
Lucas County's abortion numbers for 2019
Total number of babies killed 1,105
Mothers that were Lucas county residents 695
White – 272 (39.1%)
Black – 299 (43%)
Other – 124 (17.9%)
The Ohio Abortion Report also revealed the grossly disproportionate amount of black children killed by abortion in every large metropolitan area. Though the black community comprises approximately 12-14% of the Ohio population, they report 43-65% of all abortions. Where is the outrage for these black lives? Indeed, they matter!
Cuyahoga (Cleveland) 65%
Franklin (Columbus) 46%
Hamilton (Cincinnati) 57%
Lucas (Toledo) 43%
Another area of growing concern statewide and locally is the significant increase in non-surgical abortions. In 2017 they accounted for 30%; in 2019 they account for 38.9%. Abortion facilities that just perform medical or chemical abortions like Capital Care are not under the oversite of the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). “One of our primary legislative priorities moving forward will to be address this lack of oversite.” Sitter said.
